"Hanse Shaw", a teenage stowaway

(From Ancestry.com)
# Name: HANCE SHAW
# Sex: M
# Birth: 1722 in Glasgow Scottland
# Death: in Guilford Co. North Carolinia

# Note: Hanse Shaw was a teenage stowaway on a ship from Scottland around 1700 The "Tobacco Aristocracy" were in the zenith of their fame. Not a few of these magnates had made immense fortunes by the American trade, more particularly in tobacco, which was imported in large quantities into Glasgow, and then dispensed over the kingdom. They owned a considerable fleet of ships and brigantines, about 200 tons burthen each, and something like the annexed figure when in full sail.

In the times preceding the American war of independence, the "tobacco lords" were in the habit of "pacing the plainstones" on the north side of the Trongate, clad in scarlet cloaks, cocked hats, bushy wigs, knee breeches, and silk stockings. They were the "cream of the causeway;" and no tradesman or shopkeeper dared to address them off-hand, or encroach upon the promenade ground, without leave, under pain of the highest displeasure.

Red cloaks with hoods were also quite common with the ladies of those days; while pattens and sedan chairs were used for purposes of locomotion. Every now and then the public hangman might be seen whipping criminals through the streets at the cart's tail; while the pillory and the scaffold were very frequently in use.

I have a Shaw family history folder-Solomon Webber Shaw, desc. from William and Sarah Fritz, from William and Ann Allison Shaw. Same dates roughly, has 1814, from the probate date. My folder begins with a "Hanse Shaw, a teenage stowaway on ship from Scotland in late 1600s or early 1700s. Mostly folklore, no written doc. States documented William Hanse Shaw b. 4/16/1748 NC officer under Gen Washington in NC Brigade. Land grant in Guilford Co., NC, listed as a weaver. m. Ann Ellison or Allison, 4/19/1774, father Samuel Ellison/Allison. Spelled both ways more than once.

Story involves land grants from war. He bought land in Christian Co, KY - old Shaw Church (probably Presbyterian) and cemetery listed in Chester Co., SC

A second William Shaw was a twin to James Shaw, b. June 22, 1793 in SC, this one m. Sarah Fritz, and was ancestor of my Solomon Shaw. Ch of William and Ann: Jane , m. William Stuart, Samuel, Robert, twin to Samuel, Susanna, M. George Harlon, Snith, Martha, mm. James Wilkins, Isabella, m. George Hartin or Hortin, Elizabeth, m. Jesse Brittan, James, William, twin of James, Anne, of these 11, only Jane, Martha and William lived and died in Christian Co, KY. Please email me: gracie62@myfamily.com

I am researching the William Shaw who Married Ann Allison.
William was born Apr. 16,1748 of Guilford,N.C.
Mar. Ann Allison Apr. 19, 1774 Wilson, Tenn.
died Feb. 22, 1813 Fairview,Christian,Kentucky

William was Rev. soldier, serving under General Washington along with his brothers.

All I know of his father is the name "Hance' probably a nickname. Possibly Robert as his given name.

Know nothing of Ann Allison except what I have stated above.

Would like to hear from anyone researching this line, I can share what I have up to this point in my research.

Carol
