THE SHAW FAMILY HISTORY


Daughters of John W and Minnie F. Shaw


Maud E., the oldest daughter of John W. and Minnie F. Shaw, received her first years schooling while her parents lived west of Russiaville, in Clinton County, with the writer of this article as her teacher. She then attended a country school near Indianapolis and also the city schools there, finishing her education in the Teetersburg schools after her parents moved to Tipton County.

She was then married to Thomas O. Phifer of Teetersburg, on April 4, 1903. Four children were born to them: Garnett Harold, June 15, 1904; Edith Magdaline, May 29, 1906; Mildred Irene, December 23, 1908, and Minnie Loretta, May 14, 1913. The children all received their education in the public schools of Goldsmith. The two youngest girls, being especially gifted in music, are so many times called upon to sing together at funerals and on other special occasions. Both have also served as pianists at the Teetersburg Church.

Garnett Harold Phifer was married to Miss Mildred Carter on May 23, 1925. They have five children: Lois Jean, born July 4, 1926; Juanita Maxine, born November 18, 1928; Betty Jo, born June 16, 1931; Barbara Ann, born February 26, 1933; Donna Jane, born April 18, 1938. Their home is in Goldsmith and Garnet has work at Perfect Circle, Tipton.

Edith Magdaline Phifer was married to Fred Thompson on November 25, 1923, he dying December 18, 1932. On June 9, 1937, she was married to Harry Boyer, whose work is that of a mechanic. They have a nice little home in Teetersburg, which is on R. F. D. No. 5, from Tipton.

Mildred Irene Phifer was married to Fay Smith on March 15, 1932. They live on a farm near their parents' home.

Minnie Loretta Phifer was married to Dova Lee on April 18, 1931. They have a little daughter, Carolyn Joan, two and a half years old. They also live on a farm near Teetersburg.

Thomas and Maudie Shaw Phifer have a comfortable and well appointed home in Teetersburg, where they are accounted among the most prominent citizens. They are members and faithful workers in the M. E. Church in that little burg.


Mabel D., second daughter of John W. and Minnie F. Shaw, after receiving her education in the Goldsmith schools, was married to Robert E. Watson, on December 23, 1916. Four children were born to them: Velva Imogene, born in Tipton September 9, 1917, Dona Buthene, born in Kokomo, February 18, 1919; Robert. J., born in Kokomo, November 23, 1921, Hugh Enfield (Buddy), born in South Bend, December 5, 1929. On February 1, 1932, Mabel D., was married to William F. Myers. They have one son, Kenneth Frederick, born in South Bend, January 8, 1933.

Velva Imogene, the oldest daughter, received her education in South Bend grade schools and was married to Eugene Walters, December 31, 1936. She and her husband reside in South Bend.

Dona Buthene was graduated from the South Bend Central High School in June, 1936, and now resides at 1310 East Second Street, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Robert J., is now attending Riley High School in South Bend and Hugh Enfield is a pupil in the Studebaker grade school in that city.


Ruby Grace, youngest daughter of John W. and Minnie F. Shaw, attended the schools of Goldsmith and was then married to Hugh Mandes Holloway on July 31, 1920. Three children were born to them: Betty Bernadine, January 19, 1924; Bernard K., July 23, 1931, and Phoebe Gail, February 25, 1936, The children were all born in Lima, Ohio, where the family now resides and where the husband's work is Triple Valve Repairer with the Nickel Plate Railroad Company.
