!FAMILY RECORD hand written on March 19, 1837 by Elizabeh McMinn Shaw lists all of the chidlren, their birth and some death dates. No place of birth was given.

!BIRTH, DEATH & MARRIAGE dates are from the William Shaw Bible, which in 1900 was in the possession of his grandson, R.F. Vaughan, of Fairview, KY., This information was also handed down in the Smith Shaw family and in other branches of the Shaw descendants that have been contacted.

!RESIDENCE: William Shaw is first known to have lived in Guilford Co. N. Carolina. At least the first four children are said to be born in Guilford Co. The fith child, Smith Shaw, has had both N.C. and S.C. given as his place of birth, but for sure by 1786,William Shaw was a resident of Chester District, South Carolina. Numerous land records are found there. He removed about 1802 to Wilson County Tennessee and after a short stay there he settled in Christian County KY.

!1790 CENSUS OF CHESTER CO. SOUTH CAROLINA, pge 178, lists William Shaw, with 3 males over 16 including heads of household. and 2 males under 16, and 4 females. Enumerated on the same page is Hugh Stuart ( father of William Stuart who married one of William's daughters)

!Altho William held land in Chester Co. S.C., during the the early 1800's he must have moved his family back to Guilford. Perhaps at the death of his father-in-law. In any event he is not listed in Chester Co. S.C. on the 1800 census. Instead we find him in Guilford Co.

!1800 CENSUS OF GUILFORD CO., N.C. William Shaw and his family are enumerated in that county. and listed between the McMinn family and the Forbis family. and the Allison family near by. There are 2 males under 2 (the twins, James and William), 1 male 10/16 (Smith) and 1 male 26/45; 3 females under 10, a female 10/16, a female 16/26, and 1 female 26/45. which accounts for all of the children except Jane who was married and Samuel who was probably in Charleston in business.

!LAND RECORDS: McMinn land records in Guilford referred to land bounded by William Shaw. He is also mentioned on deeds pertaining to the Allison family. It is thought that the Shaws and related families moved into Guilford County, N.C. just prior to the Revolution, in the mid or early 1770's. They were not found in the records of either Rowan or Orange Counties, from which Guilford was created in 1771. William Shaw's first appearance in the Guilford Deeds is on Jan 7, 1778, when Robert Hannah of Guilfordandwife Isabell sold for 40 pds. to William Shaw of the same, weaver, 100 acres on both sides of Beaver Creek, beginning at a post oak and runing south 27 chains (1:448, witnessed by John Forbiss, Andrew Finley). On Dec 16, 1778, William received a grant fromthe state of 450 acres on both sides of Beaver Creek, beginning at a post oak corner to deeded land formerly the property of Robert Hannah (1:523) Then on Nov. 8th, 1784, Robert Shaw and William Shaw jointly received a grant of 400 acres on the waters of Great and Little Alamance (3:177) This Robert is said to have been Williams's brother.

William moved to Chester Co., South Carolina shortly thereafter. In the Guilford deeds we find that on Jan 29, 1787, William Shaw "of the State of South Carolina" withwife Ann, and Robert Shaw, shoemaker of Guilford Co. sold for 40pds. to Robert Morrow 400 acres on Great and Little Alamance, being the grant referred to above. (4:186, witnessed by Samuel McDell, Wm. Shaw). All parties to the deed were able to sign their names. Finally we find that on Nov. 8, 1792 William Shaw " of the State of South Carolina", with wife Ann, sold for 90 pds. toJeremiah and William Forbis of Guilford 43 acres on boths sides of Bever Creek, beig "part of a tractthat John Forbis now lives on" (5:339, witnessed by William Shaw and John (X) Elmore). Later William Shaw deeds in Guilford seemto refer to younger members of the family.

William's deeds in Chester Co., S.C. may be summarized as follows: On Jan 10, 1785/6 John Moultrey of Craven Co., S.C. sold for 100 pds. to William Shaw of `Gilford' Co., N.C. 250 acres on the east side of Broad River, joining John Walker and Hazel Hardridge (A:59, ) On Jan 25, 1790 John Franklin of Chester Co. solf for 100 pds toWilliam Shaw of the same 17 plus 129 acres on Sandy River ( B:162) and on Jan 27, 1794 Thomas Baker Franklin of Chester sold to William Shaw 113 acres on Caldwells Branch of Sandy River. (D:352) Following this deed, on May 12, 1794, William Shaw and wife Ann of Chester Co. sold for 50 pds. to Edmund Lee 100 acres joining Hazel Hardwick (D:194)

A decade later William sold off his property in South Carolina. The first sold on Oct 8, 1804 to John Humphries for $1131, 300 acres,` being part of an original grant to John Moultrie...bought in 1785' signed by William and his wife Ann of Chester Co., (L:167) Next, onSep23, 1805, William Shaw sold to Henry Head for $550, 163 acres on Sandy River (L:212), and 7 Oct 1805, William Shaw of Chester Co., sold for $100. to Sam;uel Johnston Jr. 250 acres. on Sandy River, being a grant to said Shaw (M:168) Two more deeds prove William's move west. On May 2, 1808 William Shaw of Christian Co., KY. sold to Henry Carter, 200 acres inChster, granted to said Shaw on Nov 5,1804 (O:78) Finally on Oct 17, 1809 William Shaw "late of Christian Co." KY. gave a release of debts to Samuel Lowry of Chester Co. (O:77)

!It is reported in several histories, and in the History of Christian County Kentucky, on page 631 that.." William Shaw's (Jr.) father of Scotch-Irish descent served in the War for Independence, as did several of his brothers. The Shaw family were settlers in the Fairview neighborhood about the time that Samuel Davis, the father of Jefferson Davis, came to the county and located at what is now Fairview." Since William died before pensions were granted, there is no record of his applying for compensation for his service in the war. Nor have we, or hired researchers in N.C., found proof of this service. Nevertheless, Members of the family have made application and been granted membership in the DAR on his service during the Revolutionary War as a Soldier in the North, Carolina Brigade while acting in Capacity as a soldier. REGISTERED in NSDAR #566779 in the name of Clare Shaw Hoback. This DAR information was taken from the application form and also verified by by Mrs. Loyd W. (Lucy George T.) Booker, RFD # 1 Box 411, Columbia, TN 38401;a Shaw descendant and long time registrar for the DAR, By proving their line back to William, other of his descedants should also be eligible for membership.

!MARRIAGE date is from the Family record. No place is given, but it would . seem likely that he was married in Guilford Co., N. C.

!DEATH is recorded in the Family Record.

!PROBATE: William Shaw's will is recorded in Christian Co. Kentucky, bk. B page 149, 1814.
